Congrats !

It was a veritable who’s who of academia, state and international governance in Midtown Manhattan this morning. At a press conference held at the Harvard Club, the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology was announced as one of the four leading Israeli universities receiving more than $100 million to support the new Zuckerman Scholars Program in STEM Leadership. The Program is a transformative initiative designed to enable future generations of leaders in science, technology, engineering and math in the United States and Israel, and over time, foster greater collaboration.

This generous program is funded by American business leader and philanthropist Mortimer Zuckerman. The Zuckerman Scholars Program in STEM Leadership will provide the highest-achieving American postdoctoral researchers with the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers at Israel’s top research institutions—The Hebrew University of Jerusalem; the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology; Tel Aviv University; and the Weizmann Institute of Science. By providing American post-docs with exposure to Israel’s renowned cutting-edge research and startup culture, Zuckerman Scholars will in essence evolve into a generation of academic, scientific and industry leaders in the United States, infused with a unique spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation.

“The Zuckerman Scholars Program gives us a new model for cooperation and partnership that will ultimately better society as a whole,” said New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. In his remarks, the governor also acknowledged the Technion’s growing international sphere of influence: “…the Technion is really an amazing institution, for what it does for Israel, and what it does for the world.”

“The best research is collaborative in nature … the new program will not only help improve scientific research at its highest level, but will also serve as a new and important pillar supporting the foundation on which the ties between Israel and the United States will continue to prosper,” said Technion President Peretz Lavie.

“What an honor to witness the launch of the Zuckerman Scholars Program,” said ATS Executive Vice President Jeff Richard. “The spirit of collaboration it will engender between the Technion and other leading Israeli institutions, and top US universities, will mean scientific innovation and advancement for the entire world.”
